20160430_081133Today, the Balinese all over the island are celebrating Tumpek Kandang, one of Bali’s religious ceremonies to respect animals. Celebrated every 210 days, offerings are prepared to thank the Gods in the manifestation of Sang Hyang Rare Angon, the God of shepherd for a successful year of farming and excellent produce. On this day, prayers are offered as the animals are washed and dressed-up in clothes fit for humans symbolically. Unlike any other Bali’s religious ceremonies, during Tumpek Kandang offerings are made in a simple presentation. This is not because it is less important, but more because “Tumpek” itself is celebrated in many stages within a year.
duckTo get a better understanding, The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, “Tumpek” which means Saturday and “Kandang”, which both in  Balinese and Bahasa means the household of animals mostly kept in the house such as cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs, and birds. In a simple way of comprehension Tumpek Kandang is a form of action in showing our respect to all living creatures particularly animals and be thankful to the creator. This is too related to the Tri Hita Karana a Balinese concept of harmonious relationship between human and God, nature and among human being. *BB-RM*
